*Venatores* ("hunters") were a type of performer in ancient [Rome](https://www.worldhistory.org/Rome/) who specialised in hunting and fighting wild animals in [Roman](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Roman/) amphitheatres. In staged hunts or combat scenarios, they would face off against dangerous animals such as lions, bears, or wild boars.
