The Hippodrome of Gerasa in modern-day [Jerash](https://www.worldhistory.org/Jerash/) in [Jordan](https://www.worldhistory.org/Jordan/) is the smallest of the 48 [Roman](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Roman/) [circus](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Circus/) buildings known today, measuring about 250 x 50 m. However, it is one of the best-preserved Roman circuses in its functional and technical elements. The hippodrome could seat 15,000 spectators for [chariot](https://www.worldhistory.org/chariot/) races and other sports. Its construction was part of Emperor [Hadrian](https://www.worldhistory.org/hadrian/)'s ambitious building plans for Gerasa soon after his imperial visit in 129/130 CE, and the circus was completed in the early 3rd century CE.
