The town was the first to be liberated in France, taken by U.S. paratroopers on [D-Day](https://www.worldhistory.org/D-Day/) 6 June 1944 during the [Normandy Landings](https://www.worldhistory.org/collection/243/the-normandy-landings/) of WWII.
