This map illustrates the Castles of the Loire, or Châteaux de la Loire, a remarkable collection of more than 300 grand residences spread across France’s Loire Valley. Many originated as medieval fortresses but were transformed between the 15th and 17th centuries into Renaissance masterpieces designed for comfort, leisure, and display rather than defense. Renowned for their elegant [architecture](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/architecture/), expansive gardens, and layers of history, these castles reflect the tastes and ambitions of French royalty and nobility during a period of artistic flourishing.

Among the most celebrated examples are [Château de Chambord](https://www.worldhistory.org/Château_de_Chambord/), with its distinctive French Renaissance style and double-helix staircase; [Château de Chenonceau](https://www.worldhistory.org/Chateau_de_Chenonceau/), gracefully spanning the River Cher; and Château de Villandry, famed for its ornate gardens. The Loire Valley, often called the “Garden of France,” is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site for its cultural heritage and scenic beauty, standing as a living testament to the intertwined history of art, architecture, and landscape in early modern France.
