The [Tang Dynasty](https://www.worldhistory.org/Tang_Dynasty/) (618–907) was one of the most powerful and influential dynasties in Chinese history. During the reign of Emperor Gaozong (reign 649–683), [Tang](https://www.worldhistory.org/Tang_Dynasty/) rule reached one of its greatest extents, combining strong imperial administration in [China](https://www.worldhistory.org/china/) proper with military protectorates and dependent territories stretching into Central Asia and the Korean Peninsula. The dynasty's political strength rested on effective bureaucracy, military organization, and the integration of regional elites into the imperial system.

Tang China also became a major center of [culture](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/culture/), [trade](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/trade/), and exchange. Its capital at [Chang'an](https://www.worldhistory.org/Chang'an/) was one of the largest and most cosmopolitan [cities](https://www.worldhistory.org/city/) in the world, while the [Silk](https://www.worldhistory.org/Silk/) Roads connected the [empire](https://www.worldhistory.org/empire/) to Inner Asia, [India](https://www.worldhistory.org/india/), and the Islamic world. These networks helped spread goods, technologies, religions, and ideas, making the Tang era a formative period in the history of East Asia and Eurasia more broadly.
