7th Cavalry Regiment guidon found at Slim Buttes fastened to the lodge of Chief American Horse. Although American Horse (the Elder) was not present at the [Battle of the Little Bighorn](https://www.worldhistory.org/Battle_of_the_Little_Bighorn/), [war](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/War/) trophies such as the guidon encouraged the destruction of his camp by US Cavalry retaliating for that engagement on 9-10 September 1876. American Horse died from wounds sustained in the [Battle](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/battle/) of Slim Buttes.
