# Temenos Gate in Petra

The Temenos Gate in Petra ([Jordan](https://www.worldhistory.org/Jordan/)) is a monumental triple-arched gate erected at the western end of the colonnaded street. It marked the access to the sacred open precinct of the Qasr Al Bint. The 17-meter-high Temenos Gate originally had arches over the three passages, huge wooden doors and side towers. It was probably built in the first half of the 2nd century CE during the reign of the [Roman emperor](https://www.worldhistory.org/Roman_Emperor/) [Trajan](https://www.worldhistory.org/trajan/) (r. 98-117 CE) or [Hadrian](https://www.worldhistory.org/hadrian/) (r. 117-138 CE).
