## Image Caption

The first glimpse of Petra's Treasury (Al-Khazneh) upon exiting the Siq.

The famous façade, known today as the Treasury, was originally a rock-cut [tomb](https://www.worldhistory.org/tomb/) with a two-story façade, 24.9 m wide and almost 40 m high. Both stories are embellished in the Corinthian order and are elaborately decorated with friezes, sculptured figures, vegetation, and motifs related to the afterlife and [death](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Death/). The so-called Treasury was surely the last resting place of a king, probably constructed in the 1st century BCE for King Aretas IV (r. 9 BCE to 40 CE).
