Charles Henri Hector, comte d'Estaing (1729-1794). D'Estaing commanded a French fleet during the [American Revolutionary War](https://www.worldhistory.org/American_Revolutionary_War/) (1775-1783) and participated in the [Battle of Rhode Island](https://www.worldhistory.org/article/2403/battle-of-rhode-island/) (1778) and the [Siege of Savannah](https://www.worldhistory.org/article/2405/siege-of-savannah/) (1779). His loyalty to the French royal family would result in his execution during the [Reign of Terror](https://www.worldhistory.org/Reign_of_Terror/) in 1794.
