## Image Caption

A photograph showing the trials on the Kent coast using the bouncing bomb in the spring of 1943. The bomb was designed for use in [Operation Chastise](https://www.worldhistory.org/Operation_Chastise/) of the night of 16 May 1943. The operation, also known as the 'Dam Busters' Raid, was carried out by a squadron of British RAF [Lancaster bombers](https://www.worldhistory.org/Lancaster_Bomber/) using the bouncing bomb to breach the Ruhr dams in Germany and so flood the nearby heavy industry factories.
