## Image Caption

The breached Möhne dam in the Ruhr basin, Germany, after [Operation Chastise](https://www.worldhistory.org/Operation_Chastise/) of the night of 16 May 1943. The operation, also known as the 'Dam Busters' Raid, was carried out by a squadron of British RAF [Lancaster bombers](https://www.worldhistory.org/Lancaster_Bomber/) using a special bouncing bomb. This photograph was taken the day after the raid which flooded the heavy industry in the valley below.
