Château de Goulaine, Haute-Goulaine, Loire-Atlantique, France. In the 12th century, Jean de Goulaine, Captain of the [city](https://www.worldhistory.org/city/) of Nantes, reinforced the property to protect it from attack, and it is still surrounded by marshes today. Since then, the château has been in the same family, except for brief periods during the [French Revolution](https://www.worldhistory.org/French_Revolution/) and in the early 19th century. It was classified as a historic monument in 1913. It is the most downstream and one of the last wine-producing châteaux of the Loire.
