The American commissioners depicted from left to right are John Jay, [John Adams](https://www.worldhistory.org/John_Adams/), [Benjamin Franklin](https://www.worldhistory.org/Benjamin_Franklin/), [Henry Laurens](https://www.worldhistory.org/Henry_Laurens/), and William [Temple](https://www.worldhistory.org/temple/) Franklin. The British commissioners refused to pose for the painting, hence it remained unfinished.
