Château du Clos Lucé, Amboise, Indre-et-Loire, France. Formerly known as the Manoir du Cloux, the Château de Clos Lucé was originally built in 1471 as a former fiefdom of the [Château d'Amboise](https://www.worldhistory.org/Chateau_d'Amboise/). Passing through several hands before being purchased by Charles VIII of France (r. 1483-1498), it became a summer residence for the kings of France. It would remain as such until 1516, when Francis I of France (r. 1515-1547) granted it to [Leonardo da Vinci](https://www.worldhistory.org/Leonardo_da_Vinci/), who lived there for three years until his [death](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Death/) on 2 May 1519. As Leonardo's last residence, it is listed as a historic monument.
