General [Horatio Gates](https://www.worldhistory.org/Horatio_Gates/) (1727-1806), an officer of the Continental Army during the [American Revolution](https://www.worldhistory.org/American_Revolution/). He is known for his victory at the [Battles of Saratoga](https://www.worldhistory.org/article/2386/battles-of-saratoga/) (19 September, 7 October 1777), his failed attempt to replace [George Washington](https://www.worldhistory.org/George_Washington/) as commander-in-chief of the American forces in the [Conway Cabal](https://www.worldhistory.org/Conway_Cabal/), and his defeat at the [Battle of Camden](https://www.worldhistory.org/article/2428/battle-of-camden/) (16 August 1780).
