Although mortally wounded, Patriot General Nicholas Herkimer continues to command his troops at the [Battle](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/battle/) of Oriskany (6 August 1777), during the [Saratoga Campaign](https://www.worldhistory.org/article/2384/saratoga-campaign/) of the [American Revolutionary War](https://www.worldhistory.org/American_Revolutionary_War/). While Herkimer's Patriot troops ultimately retained control of the battlefield, they suffered so many casualties as to be effectively eliminated as a fighting force. Painting by Frederick Coffay Yohn, c. 1901.
