After the [war](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/War/), the marquis helped secure the spy's freedom, who adopted the name of James [Lafayette](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Lafayette/). This work was commissioned by [Marquis de Lafayette](https://www.worldhistory.org/Gilbert_du_Motier_Marquis_de_Lafayette/) himself to show his commitment to abolitionism.
