Christopher Greene (1737-1781), a colonel in the Continental Army who commanded the famous [1st Rhode Island Regiment](https://www.worldhistory.org/1st_Rhode_Island_Regiment/), the first American military unit to consist primarily of Black soldiers. Greene led the regiment at the battles of Red Bank and Rhode Island but was killed in an ambush by New York Loyalists at Pine's Bridge in May 1781. Oil on canvas by James Sullivan Lincoln, 1863.
