Dr. Charles A. Eastman (also known as Ohiyesa, l. 1858-1939), a [Native American](https://www.worldhistory.org/Native_Peoples_of_North_America/) [Sioux](https://www.worldhistory.org/Sioux/) author, activist, and physician. Eastman arrived at Wounded Knee to care for the wounded following the [Wounded Knee Massacre](https://www.worldhistory.org/Wounded_Knee_Massacre/) of 29 December 1890 and provided a firsthand account of the experience.
