## Image Caption

The interior of the [Byzantine](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Byzantine/) fortress of Petra Justiniana on the Black Sea in modern-day Georgia near Batumi. As the name suggests, it was built by Emperor [Justinian I](https://www.worldhistory.org/Justinian_I/) in 535 CE. The interior of the fortress includes the ruins of a Byzantine basilica, two bathhouses, and economic buildings surrounded by a fortified [wall](https://www.worldhistory.org/wall/) and towers.
