The fort (known today as the Gonio Fortress) is located 15 kilometres (9.3 mi) south of Batumi near the Turkish border. It was the largest [Roman](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Roman/) stronghold along the Colchian littoral (the Pontus Limes).

The third construction period of the building is dated to the reign of [Hadrian](https://www.worldhistory.org/hadrian/) (r. 117-138 CE), perhaps on the occasion of [Arrian](https://www.worldhistory.org/Arrian/)’s visit in the early 130s CE. The entire floor was decorated with a Roman [mosaic](https://www.worldhistory.org/Mosaic/) made of multicoloured pebble fragments.
