The United States had recently entered the war, beginning to shift the balance of power.

Although the war's epicenter was the Western Front, the February Revolution in Russia led to [Tsar Nicholas II](https://www.worldhistory.org/Tsar_Nicholas_II/)'s abdication and instability on the Eastern Front. In the South, British forces were making strategic advances and reshaping the political landscape in the [Levant](https://www.worldhistory.org/levant/). Meanwhile, the Balkans remained a powder keg of tensions and territorial ambitions.
