This Kalighat painting depicts a scene from the [Sanskrit](https://www.worldhistory.org/Sanskrit/) epic, [Ramayana](https://www.worldhistory.org/The_Ramayana/) where [Ravana](https://www.worldhistory.org/Ravana/), a demon, abducts Sita, the wife of [Rama](https://www.worldhistory.org/Rama/). Jatayu, a demigod and a follower of Rama tries to rescue Sita. This painting originates from Kolkata, [India](https://www.worldhistory.org/india/), and is dated around 1855-1860 CE. It is made on paper with watercolor (Victoria & Albert Museum, London).
