## Image Caption

The frontispiece to *Novum Organum* by Sir [Francis Bacon](https://www.worldhistory.org/Francis_Bacon/) (1561-1626), published in 1620. Presenting what he described as a new [scientific method](https://www.worldhistory.org/Scientific_Method/) of inquiry, [Bacon](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Bacon/) likened himself in this pioneering endeavor to [Christopher Columbus](https://www.worldhistory.org/Christopher_Columbus/), hence the ship sailing beyond the traditional boundaries of the known world of antiquity, the Pillars of [Hercules](https://www.worldhistory.org/hercules/).
