The conflict developed from interconnected religious, political and economic tensions: Protestant England's support for the Dutch Revolt against Spanish rule, English privateering against Spanish shipping and possessions, competition over Atlantic [trade](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/trade/), and the wider confessional struggle between Elizabethan England and Catholic Spain. Commanded by Alonso Pérez de Guzmán, Duke of Medina Sidonia, the Armada was intended to secure the English Channel and coordinate with the Duke of Parma's Army of Flanders, which would cross from the Netherlands to invade England. English naval attacks and the Dutch blockade of Parma's coastal forces prevented this crucial junction. English maneuvering and gunnery, Dutch control of the shallow waters off Flanders, Spanish communication and logistical difficulties, the fireship attack at Calais, and the fighting at Gravelines disrupted the invasion plan; damage, shortages, disease, navigational difficulties and severe weather then inflicted further losses during the retreat around [Scotland](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Scotland/) and [Ireland](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Ireland/). The failure of the Armada removed the immediate threat of invasion and strengthened Elizabeth I's political prestige, but it did not destroy Spanish naval power or immediately overturn the European balance of power.
