French Emperor [Napoleon I](https://www.worldhistory.org/Napoleon_Bonaparte/) retreats from Moscow after his disastrous invasion of Russia. Though it has long been said that "General Winter" defeated the French, the failure of [Napoleon's invasion of Russia](https://www.worldhistory.org/Napoleon's_Invasion_of_Russia/) had already occurred by winter's onset. Still, the famous Russian winter made the retreat from Moscow all the more deadly, ensuring the destruction of the once-formidable Grande Armée.

Oil on canvas painting by Adolph Northen, 1851.
