# Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington

A c. 1815 oil-on-canvas portrait by Thomas Lawrence of Sir Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington (1769-1852). Wellington is best known for leading the Allied army during the [Peninsular War](https://www.worldhistory.org/Peninsular_War/) (1807-1814), for defeating [Napoleon](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Napoleon/) at the [Battle of Waterloo](https://www.worldhistory.org/article/2303/battle-of-waterloo/) (18 June 1815) and for serving as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom (1828-1830; 1834). The duke is shown resplendent in a plethora of insignia of prestigious orders including the [Order of the Garter](https://www.worldhistory.org/Order_of_the_Garter/), the Order of the [Golden Fleece](https://www.worldhistory.org/Golden_Fleece/), and the Order of the Bath.
