Posthumous portrait of French Vice-Admiral François-[Paul](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Paul/) Brueys d'Aigalliers, commander of the French fleet during the expedition to [Egypt](https://www.worldhistory.org/egypt/) in 1798. He was killed aboard his flagship *L*'*Orient* during the [Battle of the Nile](https://www.worldhistory.org/article/2244/battle-of-the-nile/) (1-2 August 1798).
