## Image Caption

*Dancing Scene in the Caribbean*, oil on canvas by Agostino Brunias, sometime between 1764 and 1796. The painting depicts men and [women](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/women/) of African descent dancing on a Caribbean island, most likely St. Vincent or Dominica, where the Italian-born artist lived from 1764 to his [death](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Death/) in 1796. Such idealised images were common for Brunias, who often sold his paintings to rich plantation owners of colonial officials, depicting a one-sided and possibly distorted view of slavery and harsh living conditions in colonial plantations.
