# Macadamised Road

A photograph of a macadamised road taken in the 1850s. The macadamised road, that is, a hard and relatively smooth road surface made using two layers of stones (one aggregate layer and a top layer of very small stones), was first made on a stretch of road near Bristol. The surface technique was invented by the Scotsman John Loudon McAdam (1756-1836) in 1816. The idea quickly caught on and greatly improved the lifespan of roads and the comfort of the travellers using them.
