A 19th-century advertisement for a lawnmower. The lawnmower was invented by Edwin Budding in England in 1830. The machine replaced the much slower and more expensive process of cutting grass by hand using a scythe. Budding was inspired by the rotary blades used in the textile industry. The machine was popular with gardeners and those who managed sports fields, making a cut lawn an affordable reality for many more people. The machine has evolved but Budding's essential design is still used today in many models.
