## Image Caption

The legendary Frankish king Pharamond being raised up on a bulwark or shield by his soldiers; this custom was later used by the [Merovingian Dynasty](https://www.worldhistory.org/Merovingian_Dynasty/) during their coronations, to symbolize their election to power by the consent of the [Franks](https://www.worldhistory.org/Franks/). Oil on canvas painting begun by Pierre Revoil in 1841 and finished by Michel Philibert Genod in 1845.
