The power loom weaving machine was invented by Edmund Cartwright (1743-1823) in 1785. The machine doubled the speed of cloth production and meant that skilled handweavers were no longer needed. The power loom was further developed by inventors like Richard Roberts (1789-1864). By 1835, there were 50,000 power looms in use in [Britain](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Britain/).
