The Royal Mausoleum of [Mauretania](https://www.worldhistory.org/Mauretania/) near Tipasa in Algeria is a funerary monument built in 3 BCE by [Juba II](https://www.worldhistory.org/Juba_II/) of Numidia (c. 50 BCE- c. 25 CE) and his wife [Cleopatra Selene II](https://www.worldhistory.org/Cleopatra_Selene_II/) (40 BCE-c. 5 BCE). This [tomb](https://www.worldhistory.org/tomb/) may have been their final resting place, but their remains were not found.

The architectural design of the mausoleum is reminiscent of other Numidian tombs. However, it was also inspired by the [Mausoleum of Augustus](https://www.worldhistory.org/article/657/mausoleum-of-augustus/) in [Rome](https://www.worldhistory.org/Rome/), which was constructed around 28 BCE. The hilltop mausoleum is built on a circular base and was originally topped with a [pyramid](https://www.worldhistory.org/pyramid/) or cone. The monument was originally roughly 60 m (196 ft) in diameter and 40 m (131 ft) tall, although damage has reduced its height to around 30 m (98 ft).
