The *Rocket* locomotive steam engine was designed in 1829 by Robert [Stephenson](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Stephenson/) (1803-1859) during the [Industrial Revolution](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Industrial_Revolution/). The locomotive won the 1829 Rainhill Trials and so was used to pull passenger carriages on the world's first intercity line between Liverpool and Manchester. *Rocket* included many new design features, such as a multitubular boiler and a blast pipe that gave more power than rival locomotives. The success of the Liverpool-Manchester service led to [railways](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Railways/) expanding across [Britain](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Britain/).
