## Image Caption

The [Mosaic](https://www.worldhistory.org/Mosaic/) of the Captives depicts a captive family (a Moorish tribal chief with his wife and son) crouching with their hands bound. The central panel is surrounded by twelve portraits of Africans and an elaborate geometric decoration in the form of crescent-shaped shields (a standard attribute of an [amazon](https://www.worldhistory.org/amazon/)). The mosaic once occupied the apse of the Civil Basilica. Dated to c. 200-300 CE.
