A French army achieved victory over the Austrians, turning the tide of the [War of the First Coalition](https://www.worldhistory.org/War_of_the_First_Coalition/) decisively in France's favor. Depicted on the white horse in General [Jean-Baptiste Jourdan](https://www.worldhistory.org/Jean-Baptiste_Jourdan/) who commanded the French forces. In the center of the painting, just below Jourdan's sword, is [Louis-Antoine de Saint-Just](https://www.worldhistory.org/Louis-Antoine_de_Saint-Just/), representative from the [Committee of Public Safety](https://www.worldhistory.org/Committee_of_Public_Safety/).
