A releif showing a quadriga race in the Cricus Maximus, [Rome](https://www.worldhistory.org/Rome/) (2-3rd century); Trinci [Palace](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/palace/), Foligno, [Italy](https://www.worldhistory.org/italy/). The starting gates can be seen on the far left. The upper left-hand corner shows the magistrate who will begin the race by dropping a white handkerchief, *Mappa*, onto the track. The *horator* can also be seen shouting instructions to the drivers. A crash is clearly depicted in the left-hand corner.
