## Image Caption

Portrait of Éléonore Duplay (1768-1832) eldest daughter of cabinetmaker and Jacobin supporter Maurice Duplay. In 1791, French revolutionary leader [Maximilien Robespierre](https://www.worldhistory.org/Maximilien_Robespierre/) began lodging with the Duplays, and there were rumors that he and Éléonore were engaged, something that Robespierre's sister Charlotte vehemently denied. In any case, Éléonore undoubtedly was very fond of Robespierre; after his [death](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Death/) she remained unmarried and was referred to as the "Widow Robespierre".

This pastel on paper portrait is by an unknown author but is thought to have been done by Éléonore herself, c. 1790. It is currently in the Musée Carnavalet, [Paris](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/paris/).
