Field Marshal Freytag and Prince Adolphus of Great [Britain](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Britain/) are captured by French troops during a retreat on the first day of the [Battle of Hondschoote](https://www.worldhistory.org/article/2137/battle-of-hondschoote/), 6 September 1793, during the [War of the First Coalition](https://www.worldhistory.org/War_of_the_First_Coalition/). Prince Adolphus quickly escaped, but Freytag, who had sustained a wound, remained a prisoner until he was freed by a Hanoverian counterattack [hours](https://www.worldhistory.org/Horae/) later.
