## Image Caption

A [battle](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/battle/) helmet from the Sikh [empire](https://www.worldhistory.org/empire/) dating to the first half of the 19th century. Long obsolete elsewhere, chainmail and armour were still being worn, largely for visual effect, by Sikh cavalry during, for example, the Anglo-Sikh Wars (1845-9) with the British [East India Company](https://www.worldhistory.org/East_India_Company/). The bulge at the top of the helmet is to leave space for the wearer's uncut topknot of hair. (Asian Art Museum, San Francisco)
