The House of [Orpheus](https://www.worldhistory.org/Orpheus/) at Volubilis (in modern-day Morocco) takes its name from the large [mosaic](https://www.worldhistory.org/Mosaic/) depicting Orpheus playing the [lyre](https://www.worldhistory.org/Lyre/) to an audience of animals and birds. The mosaic embellished the house's *triclinium* (dining room), where the diners would have reclined on couches set against the walls. Volubilis was a prosperous [city](https://www.worldhistory.org/city/), largely thanks to its [trade](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/trade/) in olive oil, and a number of houses, including the House of Orpheus with its mosaic floors, suggest wealthy owners.
