This map illustrates the [Roman Republic](https://www.worldhistory.org/Roman_Republic/)'s territorial expansion from approximately 260 to 30 BCE, highlighting how a once-local power in central [Italy](https://www.worldhistory.org/italy/) transformed into a [Mediterranean](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/mediterranean/) [empire](https://www.worldhistory.org/empire/). From early campaigns in [Sicily](https://www.worldhistory.org/sicily/) and Spain to sweeping conquests in the east and north, [Rome](https://www.worldhistory.org/Rome/) grew through relentless [warfare](https://www.worldhistory.org/warfare/), strategic alliances, and the systematic incorporation of conquered lands into provinces.

Beginning as a regional confederation after the Latin [War](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/War/) (340-338 BCE), the Republic steadily expanded, defeating [Carthage](https://www.worldhistory.org/carthage/) in three [Punic Wars](https://www.worldhistory.org/Punic_Wars/) (264-146 BCE), subduing [Macedon](https://www.worldhistory.org/macedon/) and [Greece](https://www.worldhistory.org/greece/) (168-146 BCE), and eventually annexing [Asia Minor](https://www.worldhistory.org/Asia_Minor/), [Syria](https://www.worldhistory.org/syria/), and [Gaul](https://www.worldhistory.org/gaul/). Each conflict left behind a network of provinces governed by [Roman](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Roman/) officials, while internal reforms and civil wars set the stage for the Republic’s transformation into an empire. The final act came with the annexation of [Egypt](https://www.worldhistory.org/egypt/) (30 BCE) after the defeat of [Cleopatra](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/cleopatra/) and [Mark Antony](https://www.worldhistory.org/Mark_Antony/), marking the end of the Republic and the dawn of imperial rule under [Augustus](https://www.worldhistory.org/augustus/).
