## Image Caption

Portrait of Louis-Charles, dauphin of France (1785-1795) who was recognized by royalists as King [Louis XVII of France](https://www.worldhistory.org/Louis_XVII_of_France/), during his imprisonment in the Tower of the [Temple](https://www.worldhistory.org/temple/). In July 1793, he was separated from his family to be "reeducated" in the spirit of the French Republic. Two years after being forced to testify against his mother, [Marie Antoinette](https://www.worldhistory.org/Marie_Antoinette/), young Louis-Charles died in captivity at age 10.
