A 1793 oil painting portrait by Sophie Prieur of [Marie Antoinette](https://www.worldhistory.org/Marie_Antoinette/) (1755-93) former Queen of France, during her imprisonment in the Tower of the [Temple](https://www.worldhistory.org/temple/), following the execution of her husband [Louis XVI of France](https://www.worldhistory.org/Louis_XVI_of_France/) in January 1793. The plain portrait is in striking contrast to earlier ones capturing the Queen in sumptuous clothing, jewels, and feathered hats.
