Depiction of the Siege of Lille from 24 September to 8 October 1792 by the Austrian army during the [War of the First Coalition](https://www.worldhistory.org/War_of_the_First_Coalition/). The siege was lifted at the approach of French General Dumouriez's Army of the North, and the Austrians retreated to Belgium, where they were defeated at the [Battle of Jemappes](https://www.worldhistory.org/Battle_of_Jemappes/).
