*[Death](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Death/) of the Princess de Lamballe*, oil on canvas by Léon-Maxime Faivre, 1908.

The painting depicts the murder of the Princess de Lamballe in the [September Massacres](https://www.worldhistory.org/September_Massacres/), during the [French Revolution](https://www.worldhistory.org/French_Revolution/) (1789-99). Lamballe, a wealthy, widowed noblewoman and friend to Queen [Marie Antoinette](https://www.worldhistory.org/Marie_Antoinette/) remained loyal to the French monarchy to the last, refusing to denounce the king and queen before a tribunal of militant *sans-culottes*. For this, she was killed, her body stripped and desecrated, her head severed and stuck on a pike. This image shows her in a heroic, almost martyred, light.

Museum of the French Revolution, Vizille.
