The remains of the central headquarters building (*principia*) of Chesters [Roman Fort](https://www.worldhistory.org/Roman_Fort/) dating from the reign of [Hadrian](https://www.worldhistory.org/hadrian/) (r. 117-138 CE). The headquarter building occupied the central place in the fort. It was built around a paved courtyard surrounded by colonnades. The *principia* formed the administrative heart of the fort, where the standards of the regiment were laid up.
