The north granary of Housesteads [Roman Fort](https://www.worldhistory.org/Roman_Fort/) (*Vercovicium*). All [Roman](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Roman/) forts had granaries (*horrea*) to store sufficient supplies for the garrison and for soldiers out on campaign. The granaries of Housesteads Roman Fort are the most substantial remaining structures inside the fort. They stood on high ground within the fort to ensure secure and well-drained foundations.
