## Image Caption

The communal toilets at the Housesteads [Roman fort](https://www.worldhistory.org/Roman_Fort/) (Vercovicium) are the finest preserved latrine from [Roman Britain](https://www.worldhistory.org/Roman_Britain/). The latrine was located at the lowest point of the fort and was fed by water from the adjacent cistern down. Wooden seating would have been placed over the main sewer channel.
